Acute Injuries:

Acute injuries are sudden, sharp, traumatic injuries that occur immediately causing pain.  Often, acute injuries result from impact or trauma as a fall, sprain or collision. With having acute injuries pain, tenderness, redness skin warm to the touch, swelling and inflammation are common signs and symptoms of such an injury.

Treatment:

The best treatment to use is ice to reduce swelling and pain.  Ice, causes the blood vessels to narrow and limits bleeding to the injured area. Ice is helpful, to treat overuse or chronic pain in athletes.  Those athletes with chronic knee pain that increases after running should ice the injured area after running to reduce and prevent inflammation.  It's not helpful to ice a chronic injury before exercising.


Chronic injuries:

Chronic injuries can be subtle and slow to develop.  They sometimes come and go and may cause dull pain or soreness.  Often, they are caused by overuse, developed when an acute injury is not or doesn't heal property.

Treatment:

Heat is used for chronic injuries or injuries that have no inflammation or swelling.  Moist damp heat therapy is best because it increases circulation and raises skin temperatures and should be applied to sore, stiff, nagging muscles or joint pain.  The Heat increases the elasticity of joint connective tissues and to stimulate blood flow. Athletes with chronic pain or injuries should use heat therapy before exercising. After a workout or exercise, ice should be used on a chronic injury.
