The Small Long Rectangle Flax Seed Body Warmer was test heated by the microwave for 1 minute and 30 seconds to a point where damp moist heat was evident. To determine how long the body warmer heat was retained over time, the temperature was measured in 5 minute intervals. As the chart indicates, this body warmer retained 72 per cent heat after one hour because the oil in the seed has been heated and the shell traps in the heat giving off heat for a longer period of time

Flax Seed is a flower seed that yields linseed oil. Flax Seed is 35-40 per cent oil, the oil is what absorbs and retains the heat which remains inside the seed to be warmed by the microwave. The shell of the seed is soft, allowing moisture from the air to be absorbed for the constant release of moist heat.

Flax Seed, because it is a flower seed,  has no cooked food smell in the air or on your clothes because it is not a food product. 

Rice will have 10-15 per cent and corn a 4 per cent oil content and has a tendency to develop a bad odor with continued use. Grain products contain mostly water, which cooks out, leaving the heating medium dehydrated so it doesn't hold the heat as long.
